Dilation and Curettage

What should you know about Dilation and Curettage (D & C) procedure?

Overview

Dilation and Curettage (D & C) is a process in which doctors remove tissues stuck in the uterus. It is often recommended by doctors to treat certain uterine anomalies like heavy blood flow or after a miscarriage to clean the remaining.

Why Doctors opt for Dilation and Curettage (D & C)

Doctors often recommend D & C when there are certain abnormalities in the uterine tract. Endometrial sampling is a type of Dilation and Curettage that diagnoses conditions like abnormal bleeding from the uterus, bleeding after menopause, abnormal tissue in the uterine lining, uterine cancer symptoms, etc.

Often the tissue collected is sent to the laboratory to check for endometrial hyperplasia, uterine polyps, and uterine cancer.

Procedure

Before the procedure of Dilation and Curettage (D & C) is done, doctors often go for dilating the cervix for better treatment.

The first step of D & C is anesthesia. The type of anesthesia, i.e general, local or regional, will depend on your medical history.

You have to lie on your back and rest your legs high by the support of stirrups.

An instrument called Speculum is inserted inside the cervix with the help of a safe lubricant.

A clamp is used to hold the cervix in a fixed position and an antiseptic solution is used to clear the cervix.

A laminaria, which is a slender rod, is inserted into the cervix to help the uterine wall dilate adequately to allow instruments to enter.

A curette (a spoon-shaped instrument with a sharp edge) is then inserted into the opening of the dilated cervix to scrape out the tissues from the cervix.

Sometimes, if the curette does not bring out the whole tissue and there are some remaining, a suction instrument called Cannula is used.

The tissue removed then goes to the laboratory for tests.

Dilation and Curettage (D & C) are often followed by hysteroscopy which involves the insertion of a slender rod to view the internals of the uterus. It helps in detecting polyps and unnatural cellular colonies.

Dilation and Curettage (D & C) is a very simple procedure to clean out the uterus. Post-procedure symptoms may include light bleeding (spotting) and cramping.
