Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)- Why it matters?

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)- Why it matters?

Hysterosalpingogram or HSG is a test conducted to find out how well is your reproductive system functioning. It takes a look at your fallopian tubes along with the uterus. We all know that ovaries are important since they produce the egg in a female which then combines with the sperm of a male and leads to pregnancy. Apart from the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus are equally important. Fallopian tubes carry the egg and in the case are found to be blocked then the further process gets affected. And in case the uterus is not able to hold the embryo then it might lead to miscarriage. Hence to check if fallopian tubes and the uterus are functioning properly is equally important. And for the same, this procedure of HSG is used.

HSG is considered a positive step towards pregnancy as the results which you obtain post the test, ensure you take the right step towards family planning. Although there is not much preparation required before the HSG test, yet your doctor might suggest you take a painkiller just so you do not feel any uneasiness during the procedure. The test is performed by the specialist in their clinic. Firstly, your cervix is cleaned and then a speculum is inserted into the vagina to keep it open. Thereafter, a very thin tube called a cannula is inserted in the cervix to fill the uterus with a liquid that contains iodine. The liquid shall contrast with your fallopian tube and uterus. After this, the speculum shall be removed and images of the X-ray will be taken by the doctor. The images will show the linings of the uterus along with fallopian tubes. And after having a close look at the images, the doctor shall be able to determine if everything is normal or not. After the entire procedure is complete the cannula will be removed. The X-ray images shall be sent to the radiologist for final reports.

One might wonder if there are any side effects of the procedure. Well, every procedure is risky to some extent. With HSG the situation is the same. There is a slight risk of infection or in case you are allergic to the liquid, but all this can be dealt with the help of medication. Still in case if you find any symptom of discomfort, report it to your doctor.
