Follicle Stimulating Hormones

Follicle Stimulating Hormones or FSH are important when it comes to the fertility levels. In women, the FSH is important for the development of the follicles in the ovary. These follicles produce the hormones oestrogen and progesterone in the ovaries and maintain the menstrual cycles. In men, the Follicle Stimulating Hormones help with production of sperms and is a part of the development of the gonads.

FSH test for men

The men need to undergo an FSH test in order to

          •        Find if the sperm count is below average.

          •        Check for gonad failure or hypogonadism.

          •        It also helps in finding testicular dysfunction.

FSH test for women

In the case of women an FSH test helps in

          •        Finding out problems related to fertility.

          •        It also helpful in finding irregular menstrual cycle.

          •        The results can also help in diagnosing pituitary gland disorder or diseases affecting the ovaries.

What are the normal FSH levels?

In the case of men, the normal FSH levels are around 1.5 to 12.4 mIU/mL whereas for female it varies depending on the age. The normal level before puberty is 0 to 4.0 mIU/mL, during puberty it is 0.3 to 10.0 mIU/mL. The women who are menstruating have it in the range of 4.7 to 21.5 mIU/mL.

Luteinizing Hormone

Luteinizing Hormone or LH is a hormone that helps our reproductive system. In the case of women, it is the ovaries and in men it is the testes. The pituitary gland is responsible for manufacturing this hormone.

The doctor might need to perform a test for Luteinizing Hormone in order to

          •        Determine the male or female infertility.


          •        Find if there is a problem with the pituitary gland.


          •        Diagnose low testosterone level in men


          •        Why the menstruation periods are not occurring normally in women.


What are the normal LH levels?


In the case of men with ages between 20 and 70, the normal LH levels are between 0.7 to 7.9 IU/L and for men with age above 70 it is around 3.1 to 34.0 IU/L.


The women have different levels during different stages. During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle the normal level are 1.9 to 12.5 IU/L. At the peak of the menstrual cycle it is between 8.7 to 76.3 IU/L. In the luteal phase it is around 0.5 to 16.9 IU/L and pregnant woman have less than 1.5 IU/L. A woman using contraceptive shows a LH level between 0.7 to 5.6 IU/L and at menopause it is around 15.9 to 54.0 IU/L.
