More about Endoscopy

What is Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a procedure where your doctor utilizes specialized equipment to view as well as operate on the patient’s internal organs and body vessels. It lets the doctor see problems within the body without creating large incisions. The endoscopy cost in India is not that high and usually conducted in bigger hospitals.

The doctor inserts an endoscope via a small incision or body opening, such as the mouth. The endoscope is a flexible tube that has an attached camera, which allows the doctor to see the insides of the body. The doctor can use scissors or forceps on the endoscope to remove or operate tissue for biopsy.

Why Do You Need Endoscopy Procedure?

Endoscopy lets your doctor examine an organ visually without needing to make a large cut. Whatever the endoscope sees is displayed on the screen present in the operating room. Endoscopy procedure is used to,

  • Determine the cause of abnormal symptoms you are experiencing
  • Take out a small tissue sample that can be sent to the laboratory for further testing, it is known as an endoscopic biopsy.
  • See the inside of your body during surgery like removing tumors or gallstones, or repairing a stomach ulcer.

You may have been asked to undergo endoscopy test if you are showing symptoms of one of the following conditions,

  • Stomach ulcer
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Chronic constipation
  • Tumors

  • Blockage of esophagus
  • Injections
  • Unexplained bleeding in your digestive tract
  • Blood in your urine
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease

Prior to the endoscopy test, you will be asked not to eat anything solid for 12 hours before the procedure. You may be allowed to consume clear liquids like water or juice. Then, you may be given enemas or laxatives to use before the process to clear your system, in case the endoscopy procedure involves anus and the gastrointestinal tract.

Your doctor will also ask you if you are taking any medications, have had injuries in the past, and your medical history. Tell the doctor in case you have any allergies.
