More about IUI

Overview of IUI Treatment

Intrauterine insemination or IUI is a simple fertility treatment, wherein specially washed semen is directly injected into the uterus. It is also known by a more popular name, artificial insemination. The IUI process may be recommended in the following cases.

  • Hostile cervical mucus
  • Male infertility
  • In the cases where sperm donor is used
  • In the cases where intercourse is not possible due to pain
  • If fertility drugs treatment is unsuccessful
  • Unexplained infertility
  • If your insurance company demands some sessions of IUI before they pay for your IVF treatment

IUI Procedure

Although the IUI process is very simple, feeling nervous about it is only natural. The procedure may take place in the clinic where the semen sample is thawed and prepared. This will ensure that the semen only has sperm, which is vital for fertilization.

Next, you will be asked to lie down and the concentrated sperm will be injected into your uterus. Now, you may be asked to rest but it is not necessary. You can stand up and leave. After this IUI procedure, your doctor may ask you to take progesterone through a vaginal suppository.

One week later, the doctor will check your estrogen, progesterone, and hCG levels. After 10-14 days of IUI, the doctor may conduct a pregnancy blood test or ask you to take a pregnancy kit test at your home.

IUI Cost

While considering fertility treatments after fertility drug use, IUI can be the first tried. It is an easier process as compared to assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like IVF. IUI costs very less than an IVF treatment.

According to a survey, the IUI treatment costs almost $900. The price will vary depending on where you live and which clinic you visit. The price also depends on your insurance coverage. The price could be only for the procedure and you may be asked to pay more for blood work, fertility tests, and ultrasound monitoring.

So, the complete IUI cost can add up to $3,000. But in the case of IVF treatment, the average cost for the first cycle can be $19,000 or more.

IUI Risks

There are very low risks associated with the IUI procedure with the only risk being infection. The bigger risks are associated with the fertility drugs that are used. If you are using gonadotropins, you can be at risk for going through OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome).

While you are taking gonadotropins, you have a risk of conceiving twins, triplets, or more. So, monitoring is important.

IUI Success Rate

If the IUI and fertility drugs are combined, the success rate can be as high as 20% in one cycle. With multiple cycles, the success rate if even higher. Your age, health, and fertility will define your success rate.

It is noteworthy that in the case of IVF, the success rate per cycle is much higher. But IUI is comparatively less expensive. The process is also less invasive and fairly simple. You may want to consider multiple IUI cycles instead of a single IVF cycle if you cannot spend a lot.
