More about Surrogacy

What is Surrogacy?

Surrogacy is another method of Assisted Reproductive Technique in which the couple or the intended parent works with a surrogate who will carry and care for the baby until birth. Couples usually use surrogacy to start or grow their family when they can’t do so on their own. In IVF surrogacy, embryos are created in a lab at a fertility clinic. Sometimes the intended parents use their own genetic material and sometimes, an egg donor is required. Then, 1-2 embryos are implanted into the surrogate, who carries the baby to term.

What does surrogacy mean for intended parents?

Infertility can seem like an end to your dreams of building your own family. But surrogacy can help you overcome that issue. Just because you cannot conceive naturally does not mean that you can’t become parents. Working with a surrogacy agency will put the intended parents in a legally binding contract in which they can be with the surrogate throughout the entire pregnancy experience from start to finish which will be an emotional and rewarding path to parenthood. They put their trust not only on the surrogate but also on the surrogacy agency. The agency will handle the journey and the details which will in turn allow the parents to prepare for the arrival of their baby.

What are the benefits of Surrogacy?

  • Surrogacy helps couples to start a family by providing infertile couples an opportunity to become parents who may not otherwise be able to accomplish this dream. Surrogacy is also helpful for those women who have medical conditions that make them unfit for pregnancy.
  • Surrogacy allows couples to maintain a biological connection to the baby. The couples who want to carry on their family genetics can do so with the help of surrogacy.
  • Surrogacy has a high success rate. Surrogates have already carried other pregnancies and have a proven uterus, thus increasing their chances of successfully carrying a surrogate pregnancy. This may make surrogacy more likely to be successful than other fertility treatments for intended parents.
  • It allows the parents to be involved. Because of the legally binding contract, the couples are allowed to be involved throughout the entire pregnancy experience.

Surrogacy Process

Surrogacy is defined as the arrangement in which a woman carries and delivers a child for another couple or person. The process is done by using the intended father’s sperm or sperm donor and the intended mother’s egg or egg donor’s eggs in order to obtain an embryo which will then be transferred to a surrogate. In addition to locating a surrogate, most people will need an egg/sperm donor.

What is a Surrogate mother?

Now you may be thinking, what is the meaning of a ‘surrogate’? A surrogate is a woman who carries a baby to term for the intended parents or couple. The surrogate mother is usually between the ages of 21 and 35. She must have had a successful pregnancy and already has children. She must also be in a stable living situation and does not smoke or abuse alcohol.

Types of Surrogacy:

Traditional Surrogacy: A traditional surrogate is the surrogate mother who uses her own eggs and gets artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm. The biological mother of the baby will be the traditional surrogate. This is because it was her egg that was fertilized by the father’s sperm. Donor sperm can also be used in this process instead of the father’s sperm.

Gestational Surrogacy: Couples who do not need a genetic link between the surrogate and their child can opt for Gestational Surrogacy. The eggs and sperms of the intended parents, or a donor egg fertilized with the sperm from the intended father, or the egg of the intended mother fertilized with a donor sperm, or a donor embryo will be transferred to the surrogate. The intended parents will welcome their child and have full legal custody when the baby is born.

Arrangements in Surrogacy:

Altruistic Surrogacy: Altruistic Surrogacy refers to those surrogacy agreements where the surrogate does not receive monetary compensation. However, unforeseen expenses may arise. In most altruistic surrogacy agreements, the surrogate is a close relation to the intended parents, either a family member or a close friend.

Commercial Surrogacy: Although it can be difficult to come up with one definition for Commercial Surrogacy, the term generally refers to any surrogacy arrangement in which the surrogate mother is compensated for her services beyond reimbursement of medical expenses.
